Zagreb Attractions
Upper Town
Located on the slope of the Medvednica Mountain, it was fortified with walls and towers in the 13th century, and many legends are associated with it, like the ones of the Bloody Bride and Stone Gates – the only remaining out of four gates to Gradec, where there is still a unique and frequented shrine covered with devotional plates.
Lotrščak Tower
Among many Zagreb sites located in the Upper Town, one should mention the medieval Lotrščak Tower erected in the 13th century at the south entrance to the former Gradec. One of the landmarks of Zagreb, the Tower is the best preserved part of the former city fortification.
Church of St. Catherine
The Church of St. Catherine is the most beautiful Zagreb Baroque church and on of the Zagreb sites located in the Upper Town. Built in the early 17th century at the location of the former Dominican church, this Jesuit church is famous for its lavish stucco and one marble and five wooden Baroque altars.
Botanical Garden
Only five-minute walk from Hotel Internationl, the favourite Zagreb park, Botanical Garden is located. This protected monument of garden architecture was founded in 1889 for the purpose of university lectures and is a home of autochthonic plant varieties from different parts of Croatia as well as a number of plant varieties from the sub-Mediterranean, Mediterranean and Alpine regions.
Zagreb Funicular
The Zagreb Funicular links the Upper and Lower towns and its only 64-second long ride makes it the shortest public-transport funicular in the world. Put to action in 1890, the funicular initially had steam engines and sometimes needed a little push from the passengers themselves, while today the electrical ones are used in this, still popular means of transportation.
